What is Temporary Total Disability Under the Workers Compensation Act in Illinois?

        150 150 Clifford Horwitz

        What is Temporary Total Disability?

Temporary Total Disability (TTD) is a weekly benefit that is two-thirds of your average weekly wage (AWW), granted it is within the minimums and maximums that are stated by the Illinois Workers Compensation Commission. These minimums and maximums can be found at:http://www.iwcc.il.gov/benefits.htm. Like all benefits under the Workers’ Compensation Act, temporary total disability is tax-free. Insurance adjusters routinely underestimate injured workers’ total temporary disability rates, so it is important that you make sure you are not being underpaid.

        What is a Contingency Fee?

        150 150 Clifford Horwitz

        What is a Contingency Fee?

When a person is injured and considering hiring an attorney, they often question whether or not they can afford legal representation, and ask, “Do I need to pay an attorney up front?”

In many cases, the injured person will try (often unsuccessfully) to manage their own circumstances because they believe they cannot afford representation.

In cases of personal injury, most experienced and reputable firms offer what’s called a Contingency Fee contract to eliminate any financial concerns about attorney fees and other costs up front.

Tortious Law and Econ – An Automobile Accident Example

        150 150 Clifford Horwitz

Tort comes from a French word that means injury. Tortious law from an economical point of view covers situations when the transaction cost of bargaining is too high for both parties to agree in advance.

What do I mean by agree in advance? Two economists, Robert Cooter and Thomas Ulen state tort law is; “the attempt to make injurers internalize the externalities they cause, in situations where transaction costs are too high to do this through property or contract rights.” So, let’s think about this with an example, say an automobile accident. Under contract law, you and a person would make a contract saying that the person cannot hit you. However, it would be impossible to have an agreement or promise before an accident that states what will happen in the event of an accident that both parties agree to. Even more impossible would be to have a contract with every other possible driver.

Top 10 Tips to Keep Your Baby Safe in the Winter

        150 150 Clifford Horwitz

        Tip 1

        Dress Your Kids in Layers

For the kiddos, our first tip is to dress them in layers. It’s easy to remove layers, but it’s not easy to add them (especially if you forgot them at home). For smaller children and babies, a rule of thumb is to add an extra layer of clothing than a regular adult would wear to keep warm. The base layer should be a material that can wick away moisture such as sweat. A good base layer material could be synthetic materials, wool, silk, or cotton. Synthetic materials like polyester and microfiber-based fabrics do not absorb moisture; rather they transfer it to the outer layers. Wool is great at wicking away moisture, but it can be uncomfortable depending on how it’s made. Silk is probably the most comfortable, but it is the weakest and hardest to take care of. Finally, cotton is the cheapest and quite comfortable; but, it absorbs moisture easily making it slow to dry in colder conditions. The middle layers provide additional insulation. Multiple thin middle layers will allow for an easy adjustment of temperature. Wool, Fleece, Down, and Cotton are acceptable choices for the middle layers. The outermost layer, known as the shell layer, should let moisture through from the inside to the outside but not the other way around. Raincoats, hard shells like waterproof breathable materials, and soft shells like water resistant materials are all acceptable shell layers. Which one you choose, is dependent on the type of weather expected.
