Man Survives Fall into Chicago River after Car Accident

The Chicago Tribune reports that a man fell into the Chicago River after a car crash on Congress Parkway. Police say a red Ford sedan collided with a Lexus SUV just after 8 p.m. When one of the drivers stopped to ask if the other driver was ok, he fell into the Chicago River below.
The Chicago Fire Department arrived on the scene and rescued the man from the river. In total, he was in the water for approximately 15 minutes.
Emergency workers transported the man to a nearby hospital for treatment. The woman in the other vehicle denied treatment for minor injuries. The man sustained critical injuries, according to the local fire department.

Driver Narrowly Misses Crash with Train

ABC7 reports that a driver had a very close call with a train in Chicago. New video footage shows a female driver move into the path of a Metra train before miraculously escaping just in time.
The woman, 78-year-old Patricia Vitale, survived the crash, but the footage reveals that the car is completely wrecked. Officials say the weather may have played a role in the crash; icy conditions drastically increased the stopping distance for both the train and the vehicle. The footage indicates that the train driver may have seen the vehicle, but he could not avoid the collision.
The 78-year-old driver suffered serious injuries. She remains in intensive care at a nearby hospital.
