Mother and Three Children Killed En-Route to Halloween Parade

The Chicago Tribune reports that a mother and three of her young children died, and a fourth child was seriously injured, when a train hit their car. The family was on their way to a Halloween parade in southern Illinois. The train struck the car on the vehicle’s passenger side at the town’s Main Street railroad crossing.
Emergency responders declared the three young children dead on the scene. Paramedics transported the driver, who was the mother of all the passengers, to a local hospital. She was then airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis where she died on Friday.
Officials are unsure why the vehicle was on the railway tracks, and they speculated that the driver may not have been familiar with the area. The crossing gates were closed at the time. CSX Corp, the company of the train involved, is cooperating with authorities and sent its sympathies to the family.

Car Strikes Boy While Trick-or-Treating in Winnetka

The Chicago Tribune reports that a car struck a 3-year-old boy while he was trick-or-treating on Friday evening. Police say a car hit the boy when he ran into the street. The boy is a Glencoe resident, and doctors are treating him for his injuries at NorthShore Evanston Hospital. The boy is in a good condition, according to hospital staff.
The 24-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle at the time is cooperating with police. The accident is still under investigation, and no citations have been issued.
