        Driver Dies after Crashing into Chicago Home

        The Chicago Sun Times reports that an elderly man who failed to stop at an intersection and crashed into a house has died. According to police, the man was travelling east on Summit Street shortly after 8 a.m. when he drove straight through the stop sign. A vehicle travelling south crashed directly into him.

        The force of the collision pushed the car into a nearby home on Spring Street. Emergency workers responded to the scene and transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

        After an ‘unnatural accumulation’ of snow and ice formed on a city sidewalk due to the negligence of a city snow plow operator – making the sidewalk impassable — a woman was forced into the street and was subsequently hit by a car.  She brought suit against the city for her injuries citing negligence.

        Two-Vehicle Crash Injures Four at O’Hare International Airport

        The Chicago Tribune reports that four people are in the hospital after a serious two-car crash at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The crash was in the early hours of the morning, and police and firefighters responded at about 12:30 a.m.

        Emergency workers transported two people to the nearby Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, another to Loyola University Medical Center, and the last to Presence Resurrection Medical Center. All victims were in serious to critical condition, but officials say none were facing life-threatening injuries. Another person injured on the scene refused medical assistance.

        Man Survives Fall into Chicago River after Car Accident

        The Chicago Tribune reports that a man fell into the Chicago River after a car crash on Congress Parkway. Police say a red Ford sedan collided with a Lexus SUV just after 8 p.m. When one of the drivers stopped to ask if the other driver was ok, he fell into the Chicago River below.

        The Chicago Fire Department arrived on the scene and rescued the man from the river. In total, he was in the water for approximately 15 minutes.

        Emergency workers transported the man to a nearby hospital for treatment. The woman in the other vehicle denied treatment for minor injuries. The man sustained critical injuries, according to the local fire department.

        Two Chicago Police Officers Injured in Serious Car Crash

        Police Officer Injured in Chicago Car Crash

        There were 109 fatal accidents involving 161 vehicles in Chicago during the course of 2011, according to City Data. In total, 119 people died in these crashes, and many more were seriously injured.

        At the same time, there were fatal accidents that involved at least 50 pedestrians. It is clear, then, that road safety is a concern in Chicago, and the impact of these injuries and fatalities is far-reaching.
