Chicago Worksite Accident Injures Four
The Chicago Tribune reports that a steal beam collapsed on a construction site, seriously injuring three workers who were standing on the beam and another who was on the ground nearby. Officials say the workers were connecting the beam approximately 20 feet above ground level when it collapsed. The accident was at the start of the work day, just after 9 a.m.
Emergency workers were quick to respond. They transported two of the workers to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Responders rushed another worker to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in critical condition while the last went to Rush University Medical Center.
A spokesman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) said two bolts sheered off the beam, which caused its collapse. Workers sustained critical injuries despite taking all safety precautions including being tied to the beams and having safety nets below.
Wife of Injured Construction Worker Files Lawsuit
The Daily Herald reports that the wife of a man who sustained injuries in a construction accident has filed a lawsuit against various operators involved. The man, a mechanical engineer, spent three weeks at a local hospital after a large crane crushed him on a construction site in early December.
The lawsuit primarily targets the crane operator and is seeking substantial damages for the man’s injuries. The applicants believe the defendants did not provide a safe work environment and thus believe they are entitled to damages for negligence and safety oversights.
