Chicago Construction Site Accident Rates Remain High

Thousands of construction workers suffer injuries on the job every year in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a large number of these are fatal. In 2013, there were a staggering 4,405 fatal work injuries recorded for U.S. workers, a large number of which took place at construction sites. While the number of those killed on construction sites has remained consistent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this sector still accounts for the highest number of fatal work injuries than any other sector.

46-Year-Old Worker Dies on Chicago Construction Site

Construction site accidents involving concrete are common, and a recent case in Chicago, as reported by the Chicago Tribune, highlights just how dramatic these accidents can be. According to the report, a man was struck by what was described as a “wall of concrete” while working on building on the Near North Side.

Emergency responders transported the worker, a 46-year-old from Lockport, to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the report by the Chicago Tribune, a full investigation was underway in order to assess the reason behind the construction site accident.

Heavy Machinery Kills Man

Construction sites that utilize large diggers and heavy machinery are particularly dangerous when it comes to causing workplace injuries and deaths. In another traumatic Chicago workplace accident, a man died when he was trapped under a piece of heavy machinery in the city’s Englewood neighborhood.

ABC7 reported that the victim was a 48-year-old man who was pulled beneath the large piece of equipment. According to investigators, the workers used the machinery that caused his death to break concrete into smaller, more manageable pieces in order to allow for recycling. The man was crushed to death.

Emergency workers responded to a call for assistance; however, the man was declared dead on the scene. According to the report, he was married with children.
