ZION, ILLINOIS (March 28, 2026) – A man identified as Darren Lucas has tragically died in a Zion car accident near the intersection of 33rd Street and Sheridan Road.
Zion police officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:45 PM on Monday. A woman was heading down the roadway in a 2015 Ford utility vehicle when she hit Darren Lucas as he was crossing the street.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Sadly, Darren Lucas was later pronounced dead. The driver involved in the accident was allegedly live streaming on TikTok when it took place.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Zion Car Accidents
Every driver in Illinois must use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed at all times and keep a lookout for pedestrians. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horns when necessary and exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person. Multiple factors could contribute to any pedestrian accident.
- Pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur during periods of inclement weather.
- Pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur at intersections.
- Pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur in the early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
- Pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur if drivers are distracted for one reason or another.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this can serve as evidence of negligence. In assessing whether or not a driver could be liable for an accident, the small details matter. For example, it matters how they were using their phone at the time of any crash. A number of serious collisions involve drivers that are looking at their cell phones. In recent years, there has also been an increase in drivers involved in accidents while they were live streaming on various platforms.
Steps to Take After Zion Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are highly susceptible to being seriously injured or killed in the event of a car accident. According to the National Safety Council, “in 2023, most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (83%), on the open road (76%) versus intersections (24%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%). The largest number of pedestrian deaths occurs on Fridays (1,155), closely followed by Saturdays (1,150).” Several steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.
- All of the medical records associated with the accident should be preserved.
- Any person who may have witnessed the crash should be interviewed.
- Surveillance footage of the collision should be sought.
- The family of any person who died should see an independent review by a team experienced in accident reconstruction.
Pedestrian collisions tend to be very preventable. Many of these incidents involve drivers that are not properly scanning the road ahead of them. Sadly, drivers and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility for car accidents. They are more likely to blame the victims for what happened. The family of any person who died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil action.
