Fire and Potential Explosion Injured Two People at Property in the 100 Block of Irwin Street in East Alton

EAST ALTON, ILLINOIS (February 26, 2026)—Two people were injured in an East Alton fire and possible explosion at a property on Irwin Street.
Alton officials are saying that the accident took place on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the home after getting reports of a fire and possible explosion.
Multiple aid departments were also called to the scene to help victims. Firefighters were able to locate one person inside of the residence. That person was airlifted to a hospital to receive treatment for major burn injuries.
A survival flight ambulance was also called for the second victim, who suffered injury related to smoke inhalation.
A full investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
