Anker Innovations Issues Recall For Various Anker Power Banks Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (September 27, 2025) – Anker Innovations has recalled several models of its popular Anker Power Banks because they can pose a serious injury risk to consumers.

The recall was issued on September 18, 2025. Around 481,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the lithium-ion battery in the power banks can overheat, and this may lead to them catching fire. Anker Innovations has received 33 reports of their devices catching fire or exploding.

Four people sustained burn injuries in this accident. Several models are affected by the recall, including the A1647, A1652, A1257, A1681 and A1689.

The power banks were sold at various retailers and online stores, such as Best Buy, Target, and Amazon.

Liability for Accidents Involving Faulty Power Banks

Companies that manufacture power banks have a legal obligation to ensure that their devices are reasonably safe. They must address known safety hazards. In particular, it is well understood that devices with lithium-ion batteries may overheat and catch fire in certain situations. These companies must rigorously test their products and follow all safety regulations. There are many potential defects with lithium-ion batteries that could cause them to catch fire.

  • Manufacturing Defects: A fire with one of these devices could be caused by misaligned separators or burrs on electrodes. It is also possible that the polymer separator is weak or uneven, thereby creating the possibility of a short circuit.
  • Design Defects: Battery packs can get hot, especially as they are charging. If a power bank has poor thermal management, this can allow hotspots to form.
  • Material Defects: Power banks may use poor electrolyte solvents that are not properly stabilized. The chemical structure of the battery cells may also be impure.

When a power bank has design or manufacturing defects, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. There are several elements that will need to be demonstrated for any prima facie case of product liability. First, the defendant was the commercial seller of the product the plaintiff used. Second, the plaintiff suffered an injury. Third, the item was defective when it was sold to the defendant. Finally, the defect was the actual and proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.

Steps to Take After an Injury Involving Power Banks

Fires involving power banks and other products with lithium-ion batteries are actually quite common. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there were an estimated 245 fires at waste facilities that were “caused by, or likely caused by, lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a power bank.

  • Medical Support: Victims should seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible. Many of the injuries associated with any accident may not be obvious.
  • Evidence Preservation: The power bank involved in any fire should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause more harm.
  • Recall List: It should be determined if the item involved in the accident was on any recall list.
  • Legal Support: Any person injured by a power bank or other product with a lithium-ion battery may have legal support through a product liability claim.

Being injured by a faulty consumer product can be overwhelming, especially when any accident results in a major fire. People have been seriously injured in these accidents and incurred substantial property damage. Moreover, the companies that create faulty power banks are not likely to admit that their product was defective. This is why it is so important for victims to seek experienced legal guidance early on.
