CHICAGO, ILLINOISĀ (August 20, 2026) – A recall by Southern Telecom has been issued for the Brookstone-Branded Tabletop Fire Pits because the devices can cause serious brain injuries to consumers.

The recall was issued on August 13, 2026. It is estimated that 48,700 units were sold prior to the recall.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has indicated that the fire pits may result in uncontrolled pool fires. If that happens, flames could burn across the surface of the spilled alcohol.

Flames could also jet out from the fuel containers, thereby creating a major fire hazard. Southern Telecom has received two reports of people being injured by the products.

Those injuries included second-degree and third-degree burns.

Liability for Injuries Involving Tabletop Fire Pits

Product liability cases typically revolve around whether or not a consumer product was defective in some way. The majority of claims based on negligence revolve around showing that the affected product was defectively designed, defectively manufactured, or sold without appropriate warnings. Federal law also requires manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to report certain safety information to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Section 15Ā of the Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits the sale or distribution of products that have been subjected to a publicly announced voluntary recall. For any products that make use of fire, several types of evidence can help identify whether appropriate safeguards were taken into consideration.

  • Investigators will look at the design of any fuel reservoir and barrier intended to prevent spills.
  • Investigators will examine what warnings and instructions came with the product.
  • Investigators will also consider any prior consumer complaints or incident reports related to the testing of that product.
  • Investigators will take into consideration applicable safety standards, including ASTM F3363-19.

When product manufacturers failed to adhere to relevant safety guidelines for consumer products that make use of fire, they could be held strictly liable for resulting injuries. One particular case to consider is Voss v. Black & Decker Manufacturing Co. A man lost part of his thumb after the circular saw he was using kicked back off the board and jumped upward. The New York Court of Appeals held that there was enough evidence for a jury to consider whether or not the circular saw in that case was reasonably safe.

Preventing Ā Accidents Involving Tabletop Fire Pits

Burn injuries involving consumer products are unfortunately more common than many people realize. The Consumer Product Safety CommissionĀ has reported that an estimated 200,000 consumers are burned each year by devices that ignite or heat in some way. There have also been at least two deaths and another 60 injuriesĀ involving fire pits since 2019. Multiple steps can be taken to prevent accidents involving fire pits.

  • Consumers should never add liquid fuel to any fire pit as it is burning.
  • Consumers should always keep fuel containers closed and separated from the fire pit.
  • Consumers should keep children and any combustible materials at a safe distance from a fire pit.
  • Consumers should cease using any fire pits that have been recalled.

No matter how safe a consumer may be when they are using a fire pit, no one can anticipate all of the ways that a defective or dangerous product could hurt them. This is why it is so important that manufacturers adhere to safety standards and recall defective products as soon as possible. Unfortunately, manufacturers and insurance providers are not likely to accept responsibility when a defective product injures someone. This is why it is so important that victims seek legal advice as soon as possible after any injury.

Moreover, victims can be left with lasting nerve pain and damage that impacts every part of their life.
