WHITE COUNTY, ILLINOISĀ (September 7, 2026) – A 42-year-old man identified as Bryant Long has tragically died in a White County dump truck accident along Interstate 64 east of Burnt Prairie.

White County officials are saying that the accident occurred around 5:30 PM on Friday evening. Bryant Long was traveling down the road when he was involved in a collision with a dump truck that was making a U-turn to assist with cleanup in the area.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the injured victim. Sadly, Bryant Long was beyond medical assistance and pronounced dead at the scene.

The force of the impact caused a local brush fire which was put out by responding firefighters. A full investigation into these circumstances leading up to the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for White County Dump Truck AccidentsĀ

Illinois law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid collisions with other vehicles. Drivers must be particularly cautious when making any U-turn. Pursuant to Illinois U-turn statute, 625 ILCS 5/11-802, drivers must not reverse directions or initiate a U-turn unless such an action can be performed with reasonable safety. When a driver violates a safety statute designed to prevent accidents, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There are many factors that could contribute to a U-turn collision.

  • Distraction: The driver trying to make the U-turn may have been looking at their phone or otherwise distracted.
  • Visibility: Inclement weather or poor visibility conditions may impair a driver’s ability to recognize oncoming traffic prior to a U-turn.
  • Electronic Records: Electronic records related to the operation of a vehicle can reveal a great deal about how a dump truck was being driven prior to a crash.
  • Company Policies: It also matters whether or not a dump truck driver was abiding by company policies related to performing any type of U-turn maneuver prior to a collision.

If a dump truck driver fails to take reasonable measures to prevent accidents prior to a U-turn, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Powell v. American Service Insurance Co., 2014 IL App (1st) 123643. A driver was injured after another driver made a U-turn across the roadway directly into their path. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the turning driver failed to keep a proper lookout despite seeing the plaintiff’s vehicle during the U-turn.

What to Do After White County Dump Truck Collisions

Dump trucks have a wide turning radius and can be particularly dangerous during any type of U-turn. Part of the problem is that these vehicles have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other vehicles around them. According to one report by the NHTSA, there were an estimated 5,472 people killed in accidents involving large trucks in 2023 alone. Another 153,452 were injured in collisions that same year. Several actions should be taken after any dump truck accident.

  • Any surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should be sought.
  • Physical evidence left at the crash site should be reviewed, including vehicle fragments.
  • The police report created after the accident should be carefully reviewed.
  • Victims or their surviving family members should seek the guidance of a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.

Dump truck collisions tend to be highly preventable in many different settings. They tend to be the results of dump truck drivers that are ignoring major safety protocols. It is relatively common for companies to push their drivers to complete delivery routes on unrealistic time schedules. This can lead to those drivers adopting unsafe habits that jeopardize everyone on the roadway. The family of any person killed in a dump truck collision is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
