Charmast Power Banks Recalled Over Fire Hazard
Product Recalls - December 27, 2024
Charmast Power Banks, Sold Exclusively on Amazon, Recalled Because They Can Catch Fire While Recharging
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 27, 2024) – Charmast Power Banks were recalled due to the risk that they can overheat and ignite while recharging.
The recall was issued on December 19, 2024. Around 488,000 units were sold. If you look on the back of the unit, you will see model W1056.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the lithium-ion battery in the power banks can overheat and ignite.
This can pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers. Charmast has received 44 reports of the power banks expanding, igniting, overheating, or smoking.
Four people have reported being burned by the product. Prior to the recall, the Charmast power banks were sold exclusively on Amazon.
Liability for Fires Caused by Power Banks
Lithium-ion battery malfunctions remain one of the leading causes of preventable fires every year in the United States. According to Fox 5, “In 2024 alone, there have been 171 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries, resulting in 59 injuries and three deaths, including Indian journalist Fazil Khan who died in a fire sparked by a lithium-ion battery in February.” There are a number of reasons that a power bank could cause a fire.
- Any type of physical damage to the power bank can cause internal short circuits.
- The battery in the power bank may lack proper safety mechanisms.
- A power bank may have defective cells, such as dendrite formation.
Companies that create power banks have a legal obligation to make sure that they are reasonably safe. They must adhere to all safety regulations set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a power bank has defects that could lead to a fire, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of residential fires tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- First-degree burns
- Lung damage
- Brain damage
- Organ damage
Sites like Amazon sell products from all over the world. These products don’t always meet many of the safety regulations unique to the United States. This is particularly true with respect to consumer goods that rely on lithium-ion batteries. Any person injured in a lithium-ion battery fire may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
