Coleman Company Issues Recall For Converta Camping Cots and Converta Camping Suspension Stretchers Over Laceration and Finger Amputation Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 9, 2025) – The Coleman company has issued a recall for its Converta Camping Cots and Converta Camping Suspension Stretchers because they can injure users.
The recall was issued on June 29, 2025. Roughly 228,760 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Converta camping cots and Converta camping suspension stretchers backrests and folding mechanisms can pinch the fingers of consumers. This can pose a serious risk of laceration or amputation.
Coleman Company has received seven reports of the seatback adjustment pinching consumers fingers. Two of those injuries resulted in people sustaining finger fractures.
Recall devices were initially manufactured in China and sold through various retailers, including Walmart and Amazon.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Many people are injured every year in accidents involving very ordinary consumer products. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2020, an estimated 28,535,000 people sought medical attention for an injury related to, but not necessarily caused by, a consumer product. This is a decrease of more than 7.7 million (21 percent) from the 2019 estimate.” There are a number of measures that companies should take to avoid making dangerous products.
- Product Safety: Companies should conduct a thorough risk assessment of their product during the design phase. They should consider alternative designs that might make their product less dangerous.
- Material Selection: Companies should make their products with durable and nontoxic materials.
- Product Testing: Companies should conduct rigorous tests that simulate real-world conditions. They must take into consideration all of the ways that the products will likely be used and misused.
Every company that makes consumer products has a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. They must abide by all consumer protection laws and safety regulations set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a consumer product has manufacturing or design defects likely to cause injury to customers, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim.
Many companies have faced lawsuits or civil penalties after their products resulted in amputations. For example, Generac agreed to pay a $15.8 million civil penalty after failing to report to the CSPC that its portable generators posed a finger amputation risk. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.
- All medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
- The product involved in the injury should be stored in a safe place.
- It should be determined if the affected product was on any recall list.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
Being injured by a consumer product can evoke a variety of different emotions. People often blame themselves for incidents. But the truth of the matter is that many of these injuries involve inherently dangerous products. Any person that is injured by a product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover numerous items, including lost wages and medical bills.
