Corey Clayton, a Rockford-Area Truck Driver, Seriously Injured in Violent Assault at the Travel Centers of America on West Evergreen Avenue in Effingham

EFFINGHAM, ILLINOIS (August 12, 2026) – A truck driver identified as Corey Clayton was seriously injured in a senseless attack at the Travel Centers of America along West Evergreen Avenue in Effingham.

Effingham County officials are saying that the incident occurred around 1:25 AM on Saturday. Police officers and first responders were called to the scene after reports of a physical altercation.

Paramedics encountered Corey Clayton and began rendering first aid to him at the scene. He was transported in an ambulance to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for additional care.

His employer described him as a hard-working, professional, and valued member of the company. It remains unclear if any arrests have been made or if any suspect has been identified.
