Dorel Home Furnishings issues Recall for Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Stepper Step Stool Over Fall and Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 9, 2025) – Dorel Home Furnishings has issued a recall for the Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Stepper because they can pose a serious fall and injury hazard.
The recall was issued on July 31, 2025. Roughly 302,000 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the safety bar on the stepstools can detach while being used. This creates the serious risk that the person using the device may inadvertently fall.
Cosco has received 34 reports of the safety bar detaching while someone was using the step stool. These incidents resulted in two people sustaining head injuries.
The Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Stepper was initially manufactured in China.
Why Falls Can Be So Dangerous
Falls are one of the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Falls lead to nearly half of the TBI-related hospitalizations. There were over 69,000 TBI-related deaths in the United States in 2021. That’s about 190 TBI-related deaths every day.” Brain injuries can often lead to severe adverse health outcomes.
- Cognitive Impairments: Any type of brain injury can lead to memory loss and impaired cognitive function. People often report having difficulty with planning and decision-making.
- Physical Disabilities: Brain injuries can also lead to sleep disturbances, paralysis, and seizures.
- Emotional Changes: It is also common for brain injuries to cause severe emotional and behavioral changes within a person. Victims may suffer depression, anxiety, and personality changes.
- Neurodegenerative Illnesses: A traumatic brain injury can put victims at greater risk of developing numerous neurodegenerative illnesses, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Falls should never be treated lightly. It is important that victims seek a thorough medical evaluation, particularly if they hit their head. What might seem like a small injury at first could turn into a major problem down the road.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Dangerous Products
Companies that make consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could potentially be used and even misused. When a product has inherent defects that cause harm to consumers, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Many product liability claims will fall under three categories.
- Design Defects: Design defects are inherent to the way a product is created. They exist before a product is manufactured. A product likely has a design defect if it is unsafe to use as intended.
- Manufacturing Defects: A manufacturing defect occurs when there is some type of flaw during the construction or production of a product. For example, poorly welded joints could cause some device to come apart mid-use.
- Marketing Defects: Products may have marketing defects when they lack proper instructions or fail to warn consumers about latent dangers.
In many cases, companies will be held strictly liable in product liability claims. Under strict product liability, the manufacturer, distributor, or seller of a product could be liable for any injuries caused by a defective product, even if they were not negligent. It is important that victims of dangerous products consider their legal options and consult an experienced product liability attorney.
