Curtis International Minifridge Model EFMIS121 Recalled Over Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (January 27, 2026) – A recall was issued for the Curtis International Minifridge Model EFMIS121 because they pose a risk of serious injury.

The recall was issued on January 15, 2026. Roughly 330,000 units were sold prior to the recall. This follows a previous recall of 634,000 minifridges in July 2024.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the electrical components inside of the mini fridge may short-circuit. This could ignite the plastic housing of the unit and potentially start a fire.

The manufacturer has received six reports of the mini fridge catching fire. Curtis International Minifridges were originally manufactured in China.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products

A number of fires and burn injuries are caused every year by faulty consumer products. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2021 emergency rooms nationwide treated an estimated 193,450 burn injuries involving many types of consumer products, from kitchen and cooking products to fireworks and space heaters.” There are many ways that a product may be defective so as to contribute to a fire.

  • A product may lack adequate heat dissipation.
  • A product may use flammable materials near heat-generating components.
  • A product may have loose or cross wiring.
  • A product may have contaminants inside of its battery cells. A product may have underrated wiring or components.

A company that manufactured a consumer product could be liable for an injury if a user is injured by that product. There are a number of different ways that products could be defective. For example, a product may have designed defects that make it inherently likely to catch fire. It is also possible that the company failed to warn consumers about the latent dangers associated with their product.

Steps to Take After Injuries Involving Consumer Products

Burn injuries can be extremely painful and costly to treat. According to one study in the National Institutes of Health, “Total hospital care costs ranged from US$ 10.58 to US$ 125,597.86 per patient, the cost of 1% of total body surface area burned ranged from US$ 2.65 to US$ 11,245.04, and the cost of hospital care per day, from US$ 24.23 to US$ 4,125.50.” Victims of accidents involving consumer products should take certain steps to preserve their health and legal rights.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible.
  • The product that caused the injury should be stored in a secure location where it’s not likely to cause additional harm.
  • It should be determined whether or not the product involved was on any recall list.
  • Any person injured by a consumer product should speak with an experienced product liability attorney.

It could be difficult to know what to do after being injured by a consumer product. To make matters worse, the companies that make these products will virtually never accept responsibility if someone is injured. Any person injured by a consumer product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim. Damages in the civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
