Kichler Issues Recall for Ellerbeck Wall Sconce Light Over Electric Shock Risk
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (March 7, 2025) – Kichler has issued a recall for its Ellerbeck Wall Sconce Light because it can seriously injure users through an electric shock.
The recall was issued on February 27, 2025. Roughly 2760 units were sold, including 215 that were sold in Canada.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Ellerbeck Wall Sconce Light wires may become damaged at adjustable joints.
This can lead them to become exposed and thereby create a risk of electric shock. The lights were originally manufactured in China.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Electrocutions remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to StatPearls, “In the United States, there are approximately 1000 deaths per year, as a result of electrical injuries. Of these, approximately 400 are due to high-voltage electrical injuries, and lightning causes 50 to 300.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent their light fixtures from becoming hazards.
- Companies should use high-quality materials and components.
- Companies should perform rigorous testing and certification on all of the parts of their devices.
- Companies should integrate thermal fuses on their light fixtures to prevent overheating.
- Companies should provide consumers with clear installation and maintenance guidelines.
- Companies should design outdoor light fixtures to be resistant to corrosion and humidity.
Companies have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their products might change over time due to use. Companies should be especially concerned with the prospect that the wires on light fixtures could get worn out over time with use. If a light fixture or other product has a design defect that causes it to become dangerous, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. Electrocutions can result in very serious and critical injuries.
- Electrical burns
- Thermal burns
- Cardiac arrest
- Neurological damage
- Bone fractures
- Kidney failure
Electrical accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve companies that fail to abide by all relevant safety standards. Part of the problem is that many unsafe devices are manufactured in countries where safety standards might not be strict. These products then get imported into the United States and sold. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have legal rights. Any person injured after being electrocuted by a faulty product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
