GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (November 12, 2024) – GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters were recalled after it was discovered they can pose a fire and burn hazard.

The recall was issued on November 7, 2024. Around 512,500 units were sold. This includes 46,000 units sold in Canada.

According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters can overheat and thereby pose a fire hazard.

Testing of the devices revealed that they do not adhere to voluntary safety standards. The firm that made the device has received 113 reports of overheating and seven reports of fires.

Liability For Injuries Caused By Space Heaters

Space heaters are one of the leading causes of residential fires. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, “Although trending downward since the early 1980s, heating fires remained the second leading cause of home fires in 2021. An estimated 32,200 home heating fires were reported to fire departments within the United States. These fires caused an estimated 190 deaths, 625 injuries and $442 million in property loss.” There are a number of factors that could cause a space heater to be unsafe.

  • Space heaters may lack a thermostat or auto-shutoff feature.
  • Space heaters may have faulty electrical components.
  • Space heaters may be left in close proximity to flammable materials.

Companies that make consumer goods have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. They must follow all safety guidelines set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Space heaters should also come with clear warning labels and proper instructions for use. If a company fails to warn about the dangers of their product, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any space heater fire.

  • A police report should be created.
  • Medical records related to injury should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the space heater involved was part of a recall.

Space heater fires are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies skip on safety features in order to save money. Sadly, though, unsuspecting consumers are often the ones who have to pay for these decisions with their lives and bodies. Any person injured by a space heater may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
