GYM, PANDION and PANJI Climbing Harnesses By Petzl America Recalled Because They Can Pose Fall Hazard To Users
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (October 13, 2024) – GYM, PANDION and PANJI climbing harnesses by Petzl America were recalled because they may lead users to fall.
The recall was issued on September 12, 2024. Around 22,000 units were sold, including 5,800 sold in Canada. According to the notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the harness may inadvertently be put on backwards.
This creates the risk that users can fall from great heights and sustain serious injuries, including paraplegia or death. There has been one report of a user in the United States being seriously injured from a fall.
The GYM, PANDION and PANJI climbing harnesses were originally manufactured in Malaysia.
Liability For Accidents Involving Climbing Harnesses
As climbing has continued to become more popular, so has the number of climbing accidents. According to Statista, “The number of climbing accidents reported each year in the United States increased considerably between 1951 and 2019 from only 15 in 1951 to 202 in 2019. In that period, the year with the greatest number of accidents in the United States was 1986 with a reported 203 accidents.” Climbers need to be able to rely on the safety of their equipment. There are a number of ways that climbing equipment could be defective and contribute to a crash.
- Climbing equipment may be composed of poor quality or compromised materials.
- Climbing equipment may have carabiners, cams, or harnesses that are not correctly assembled.
- Climbing equipment may have inherent weaknesses, such as areas that are prone to failure after regular use.
Companies that manufacture climbing equipment have a legal obligation to ensure that it is reasonably safe. To that end, they must comply with all safety regulations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Manufacturers must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could plausibly be used and misused. If a company fails to properly warn users about the dangers of their products, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of climbing accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Spinal fractures
- Organ damage
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Death
Climbing is already very dangerous, even in the best of circumstances. It is imperative that companies do everything in their power to ensure that climbing equipment is safe. But far too many companies fail to properly warn consumers about the dangers of their products. Any person that is injured by defective climbing equipment may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
