Homebox Blackout Roller Window Shades Recalled Over Strangulation Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (March 2, 2025) – Homebox Blackout Roller Window Shades have been recalled because they can pose a strangulation hazard to children.

Around 4900 units were sold. The recall was issued on February 20, 2025.

According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Homebox Blackout Roller Window Shades violate regulations for window coverings.

In particular, the blinds have long operating cords. These can pose a serious risk of strangulation and entrapment for children.

The Homebox Blackout Roller Window Shades come in multiple colors, including white, gray, and black.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Window Coverings

Window coverings can be very dangerous and have resulted in many serious injuries and deaths with children. According to NBC News, “at least 440 children ages 8 and under have been strangled to death on window covering cords since 1973, based on statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission as well as internal federal data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. Most who died were toddlers.” In order to prevent window coverings from becoming hazards, there are a number of safety regulations that manufacturers must abide by.

  • Window coverings will typically need to be cordless or have inaccessible cords.
  • Window coverings must typically include tension devices.
  • Window coverings should not have looped cords in most cases.

Companies have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. They must follow all federal regulations associated with the product that they are making. When a company fails to follow safety regulations, this could form the basis of a strict liability claim. Window coverings with long cords are known to pose a strangulation hazard. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving window shades.

  • It should be determined if the window shades are on any recall list.
  • Medical records related to any injuries should be preserved.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin if your child was harmed by window coverings. These devices can leave children with very serious injuries, including brain damage. Sadly, though, companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if someone is harmed by their product. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
