Investigation Underway After Semi-Truck Rear-Ended Illinois State Trooper With Their Lights and Sirens On In Ashkum

ASHKUM, ILLINOIS (March 25, 2026) – An Illinois state trooper was injured in an Ashkum car accident along Interstate 57 by milepost 295.
Iroquois County officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:45 PM on Monday. An ISP trooper was on the shoulder of the freeway helping another driver.
They had their emergency lights and sirens on at the time of the incident. A semi-truck traveling down the interstate failed to slow down and collided with the rear of the trooper’s vehicle.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured victim. The ISP trooper was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Three other people involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital.
Liability for Iroquois County Semi-Truck Accidents
Truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with the skill and precision necessary to avoid collisions. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, “No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.” Several other factors could contribute to any semi-truck accident.
- Truck accidents are much more likely to occur if drivers are fatigued.
- Truck accidents are more likely to occur in the early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
- Truck accidents are more likely to occur when drivers are not scanning the road ahead of them.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. A truck driver could also be charged with violating Scott’s Law. The statue requires that Illinois drivers move over and slow down when they are approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. When a truck driver acts negligently and causes a collision, their employer could also be held at fault.
Steps to Take After Illinois Semi-Truck Accidents
Accidents involving emergency vehicles are quite common. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (57%).” Victims of semi-truck accidents should take several steps to protect their rights.
- Victims should seek a medical evaluation.
- All of the medical records associated with the incident should be preserved.
- Any person that may have witnessed the collision should be interviewed.
- Victims should contact an experienced truck accident attorney.
A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh 80,000 pounds. Even a low-impact collision can cause catastrophic injuries. Sadly, truck drivers and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility if they cause a collision. This is why it’s so important for victims to carefully consider their legal options with an experienced attorney.
