CHICAGO, ILLINOISĀ (September 25, 2026)Ā – A recall has been issued for the JKMAX Heated Blankets and Heating Pads because they can pose a major fire and burn hazard.

The recall was announced on September 17, 2026. Nearly 200,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the recall notice issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the internal wire heating elements may overheat during use. This could cause the device to potentially catch fire or burn users.

JKMAX has received at least 577 reports of the blankets smoking due to overheating. This includes at least 53 instances where consumers were actually burned.

The affected units were sold at Amazon and originally manufactured in China.

Liability for Burn Injuries Involving Defective Consumer Products

Companies that create heated blankets and other products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. Manufacturers are also subject to the federal Consumer Product Safety Act. These regulations are particularly important for any consumer good that has electrical components. When electrical components malfunction, they can create a major fire risk. When any electrically heated consumer product causes injury, there are several types of evidence that can help determine whether the product was actually defective.

  • It should be determined if the product had temperature control systems and automatic shutoff mechanisms for overheating.
  • The number of injuries involving the product is also important to know. When many consumers are being injured by the same product, this will typically point to a major defect.
  • It also matters whether the product had adequate warnings and instructions. Inadequate warnings could form the basis of a failure-to-warn claim.
  • The results of testing involving the product are also important. It should be determined how the product performed during the testing period.

When a consumer product has a propensity to injure consumers, this could create the basis of a strict product liability claim. Under strict liability, manufacturers can be liable for defective products, even if they exercise a great deal of care to avoid harm. However, courts will take into consideration several factors when evaluating whether a product is actually defective. For example, a defendant will typically not be liable for a design defect if there is sufficient evidence to show that a product’s utility outweighs any inherent risk of harm.

What to Do After Being Injured by a Consumer Product

Many people are seriously injured by consumer products every year. According to the National Safety Council, ā€œIn 2024, 15.1 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from consumer products. Most of the injuries involve everyday products often assumed to be safe. Many of these injuries occur to our most vulnerable populations, older adults and young children.ā€ It is important that several actions are taken after any accident involving a consumer product.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with a burn injury are not going to be immediately obvious.
  • It should be determined if the affected product had safety features common to other products that are sold on the market.
  • The product itself should be preserved and stored in a secure location. Throwing away the defective product could cause a number of unwanted complications.
  • Any person that is burned by consumer products should request a free consultation with a legal team experienced in product liability claims.

Burn injuries are among the most painful and costly to treat. They routinely necessitate that people undergo expensive skin graft surgeries. Sadly, companies that make defective products that burn consumers are not likely to admit that they did something wrong. It is more likely that they will claim that the consumer misused their product in some way. This is why it is so important that any injury involving the defective product is carefully reviewed by a competent legal team.

Getting Legal Help After Being Injured by a Consumer Product

Injuries involving consumer products are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies overlook critical safety measures. This could be due to ignorance of those safety measures. But in many cases, it has more to do with cost-cutting measures. Another major issue is that certain products get imported into the United States from regions that have less strict safety regulations.
