BRIGHTON PARK, CHICAGO (August 30, 2026) – A 36-year-old man identified as Justin McCauley has tragically died in a Brighton Park, Chicago shooting at a Thorntons gas station.

Cook County officials are saying that the incident occurred around 2:52 AM on Tuesday. One or more suspects entered the gas station with handguns and demanded that the cashier give them money.

One of these suspects began fleeing the scene before shooting Justin McCauley. Paramedics responded to the scene of the incident to help the victim.

Unfortunately, Justin McCauley was beyond medical assistance and later pronounced dead at the scene. The gas station where this tragedy took place has a history of major security incidents.

Two years ago in September 2024, three people were shot after someone armed with a gun chased an individual inside of the store. On March 31, 2024, two men armed with handguns robbed the gas station.

Liability for Violent Crimes at Chicago Businesses

Property owners in Illinois have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition as required under Illinois Premises Liability Act, 740 ILCS 130/2. This obligation extends to protecting people from reasonably foreseeable criminal activity from third parties.   • Surveillance Systems: Visible surveillance systems can act as a strong deterrent to criminal activity.
  • Lighting: Adequate lighting around the premise can also reduce the risk that people will select that location for crime.
  • Cash-Control: Cash-control practices, such as the use of drop safes, can dramatically reduce the likelihood a store is targeted for a robbery.
  • Security: The presence of security guards at a location can act as a strong deterrent for criminal activity.

While it is impossible for any business to guarantee the safety of all of its guests, violent crime is largely preventable at gas stations where the right security protocols are implemented. The level of security that any gas station will typically need depends heavily on the history of previous incidents at the location. Businesses with a history of crime will typically require much stronger security presence. Victims of violent crime at gas stations are protected by a number of laws. In particular, the family of any person who died in a gas station shooting may be able to seek some measure of accountability and transparency through a wrongful death claim.
