BLUE MOUND, ILLINOIS (August 21, 2025) – A 73-year-old man has tragically died in a Blue Mound grain bin accident off Pleasant View Road.

Paramedics and a Tactical Rescue Team were brought in to help. Sadly, the victim later died due to his injuries.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Preventing Illinois Grain Bin Accidents

Grain bin accidents cause several serious injuries and deaths every year. In particular, grain entrapment remains a leading cause of agricultural confined space-related deaths. According to Purdue University, “New findings reported no fewer than 55 cases involving agricultural confined spaces, with 29 fatal and 26 nonfatal cases. This represents a 33.7% decrease over the 83 cases documented in 2022.” Several measures should be taken to prevent grain bin accidents.

  • Training and Safety Protocols: All workers who must operate around or in grain bins should receive comprehensive training.
  • Lockout/Tagout: All augers, conveyors, and safety equipment should be turned off before any worker enters a grain bin.
  • Harnesses and Lifelines: Workers should be provided full-body harnesses that are connected to lifelines attached outside of the grain bin.

The vast majority of grain bin accidents are preventable. In far too many situations, the companies that own and operate these grain bins fail to follow established safety protocols. It is ordinary workers who ultimately pay for these lapses with their bodies and lives.

Liability for Macon County Grain Bin Accidents

When a worker is injured or killed in Illinois, they and their family can be assisted through a variety of laws. Nearly all workers will be entitled to receive workers’ compensation, regardless of how an accident took place. Workers’ compensation operates through a no-fault insurance scheme. Workers may also be able to pursue third-party liability claims if an entity separate from their employer contributed to an injury. There could be numerous sources of third-party liability for any grain bin accident.

  • Equipment Manufacturers: The company that manufactured an auger, conveyor, or some other piece of equipment could be held liable if it contributed to an entrapment.
  • Maintenance Contractors: A maintenance contractor could be liable for an accident if it was caused by improper anchoring or access points.
  • Safety Equipment Manufacturers: If safety equipment used to keep workers safe in grain bins malfunctioned, they could also be held at fault.

It can be hard to know what to do after any grain bin accident. Accident victims and their families do have legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim. Evidence preservation is critical after any workplace accident. This evidence can help reveal what went wrong and what parties may be liable.
