CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (September 2, 2026) – Chillife 5-in-1 Montessori Baby Toy Sets have been recalled because they pose a major risk of injury or death to young children from choking.

The recall was issued on August 27, 2026. Over 20,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled toy sets have a pulse ring teething toy that violates mandatory safety standards. In particular, the silicone strings are smaller and longer than what is allowed under the law.

If a child were to put the silicone strings in their mouth, they could become lodged in the back of a child’s throat and cause serious respiratory distress. The CPSC said that they were aware of four choking incidents.

The toys could be purchased on Amazon from July 2023 through April 2026.

Liability for Injuries Involving Children’s Toys

Illinois product liability law allows a person to pursue damages if they were injured by a defective toy or other consumer product. Most product liability claims are based on strict liability. Under strict liability, the defendant is legally responsible for the plaintiff’s injuries if they are able to show that the product in question was defective. This is true, even if the defendant exercised a great deal of care to avoid harm. Courts will take into consideration numerous factors when evaluating whether or not a company could be liable for a defective product.

  • The overall design of the product and the placement of component parts should be examined to determine if they create an unreasonable choking hazard.
  • Another important consideration is whether or not the product in question had small parts. It is well understood that small parts can create a clear choking hazard for young children.
  • It matters whether a product had sufficient warnings or instructions. Instructions and warnings can help parents make informed decisions about whether or not they should give a toy to their children.
  • Testing records can also help shed light on whether or not a certain product had a propensity to cause harm in certain scenarios.

Federal law requires that toy manufacturers follow certain safety guidelines under 16 C.F.R. § 1250.2. When a manufacturer ignores these guidelines, this could be construed as negligence. Liability for any specific instance where product is defective could extend it to several different parties. This includes the company that may have manufactured a product. A number of defective products are defective because of some issue that occurred during the manufacturing process. In that instance, the manufacturer could be legally responsible if the entity is separate from the company that designed the product.

The Importance of Evidence After Any Accident Involving a Defective Toy

Very young children are uniquely susceptible to the potential choking hazards posed by small toys and other small objects. According to one report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were an estimated 267,100 toy-related injuries treated in emergency departments across the United States in 2024 alone. Roughly 91,600 of these injuries involve children that were four years old or younger. It is important that evidence is properly preserved and collected after any accident where a child chokes on a toy.

  • It should be determined if the product involved was on any recall lists.
  • The toy involved in the incident should be preserved and stored in a safe location. It can be examined for defects at a later date.
  • All of the medical records related to the treatment of any child injured are also very important.
  • Testing records from the company that manufactured the toy should be carefully reviewed.

Preventing children from choking on toys requires that companies and parents make smart decisions. Companies must avoid creating products that have small parts if they are intended for very young children. At a bare minimum, manufacturers should be aware of all relevant safety guidelines for whatever product they are making. Companies should also clearly warn parents about the potential risks associated with their product. Parents can also prevent many of these accidents by providing adult supervision and picking age-appropriate toys.
