McHenry County Officials Investigate Deadly Boat Accident on the Fox River Near Riverside Drive

MCHENRY COUNTY, ILLINOIS (July 26, 2026) – One person tragically died and two people were injured in a McHenry County boat accident along the Fox River.

McHenry County officials are saying that the incident occurred around 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon. The circumstances surrounding the boat collision remain unclear.

One person allegedly fled from the scene after the incident. Paramedics were called to the side of the crash to help all of the victims.

Sadly, one person died at the scene. Two other people were injured, and one of those people was placed on advanced life support.

It appears that at least one other boat was involved in the incident. Neighbors are saying that the incident has left them shaken.

One neighbor reportedly told investigators that the stretch of river where the accident took place is known to be particularly dangerous.

Liability for McHenry County Boat Accidents

Boat operators have a legal obligation to navigate all waterways responsibly. They must maintain control of their vessel and exercise all reasonable precautions necessary to ensure the safety of their passengers and other people. According to 625 ILCS 45/5-1,  “No person shall operate any watercraft in a careless or heedless manner so as to endanger any person or property or at a rate of speed greater than will permit him in the exercise of reasonable care to bring the watercraft to a stop within the assured clear distance ahead.” There are many ways that a boat operator may act negligently prior to a collision.

• A boat operator may have failed to maintain a proper lookout for other vessels or people in the water.

• A boat operator may have failed to follow navigation rules upon encountering another boat in the water.
• A boat operator may have allowed their vessel to come too close to fixed objects such as a harbor.

If a boat operator fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vessel in the water, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Boat operators are expected to maintain a safe speed at all times and to maneuver away from the path of other vessels. Depending on the unique facts of a case, it is possible that multiple different parties could face liability for any boat accidents. For example, the company that loaned the boat could be liable for an accident under the theory of negligent entrustment. Negligent entrustment occurs when a boat or vehicle is given to someone who is unfit to handle it – by virtue of obvious intoxication or lacking the proper license.
