Persilux Zebra Blinds Recalled Due to Injury Hazard and for Violating Federal Regulations for Window Coverings

Persilux Zebra Blinds Recalled Over Strangulation and Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (September 27, 2025) – Persilux Zebra Blinds were recalled because they can pose a serious risk of strangulation and death for small children.

The blinds were recalled on September 25, 2025. Around 133,000 units were sold before the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled Persilux Zebra Blinds have long operating cords. These cords can become wrapped around the necks of small children and strangle them.

They also violate federal rules for window coverings. Moreover, they violate labeling requirements for window coverings.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Window Coverings

It has long been known that window coverings with long cords can pose a serious risk of injury for children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “There were more than 200 incidents involving children up to 8 years old due to strangulation hazards from window covering cords during a 13-year period from January 2009 through December 2021. A child died in 48% of those incidents.” Companies that create window coverings have a legal obligation to follow certain safety guidelines.

  • Companies cannot sell stock window coverings where the cords are free-hanging.
  • Companies cannot make custom window blinds with operating cords longer than 8 inches.
  • Companies must not use loop cords that do not have a tension device.
  • Companies should not sell blinds with free-hanging tilt cords.

Companies have a legal obligation to create window blinds that are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could be used and even misused. When a company fails to follow federal safety guidelines while creating their product, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. A manufacturer could also be liable if they fail to warn consumers about the latent dangers associated with their product.

Demonstrating Negligence in Product Liability Cases

There are many factors that can be taken into consideration when determining whether a product is defective. It matters whether or not there is a history of similar accidents with the type of product being used. Courts will also take into consideration whether or not a reasonable consumer would find the product defective when it is being used in a reasonable manner. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any prima facie case of product liability.

  • The defendant sold the product that the plaintiff used.
  • The defendant was the commercial seller of that product.
  • The plaintiff suffered an injury through the use of that product.
  • The product that injured the plaintiff was defective at the time it was sold.
  • The defect with the product was the actual and proximate cause of the injury.

Being injured by a consumer product can be very traumatic for children and parents as well. Parents will often blame themselves if their child is injured by a consumer product. But the fact of the matter is that many of these accidents involve products that are defective. The family of any child injured by a consumer product may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
