Academy Sports + Outdoors Recalled Redfield 12 Gun and 18 Gun Fireproof Safes Because Locking Plates May Fail
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 28, 2024) – Academy Sports + Outdoors has issued a recall for Redfield 12-Gun and 18-Gun Fireproof Safes due to injury hazard.
The recall was issued on December 5, 2025. Around 6,100 affected units were sold.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the mechanical internal locking plates can fail to align.
When this occurs, the safes may inadvertently allow unauthorized entry. The safes were sold online at academy.com and manufactured in Vietnam.
Liability for Injuries Involving Gun Safes
Accidental shootings are unfortunately very common. In most cases, young children are the victims. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among U.S. children and adolescents aged 0–17 years, and firearms are a leading injury method. […] Securing firearms (e.g., locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition) is protective against unintentional firearm injury deaths among children and adolescents […].” However, gun safes may malfunction for a number of reasons.
- Gun safes may malfunction over time due to mechanical wear and tear of the component parts.
- Gun safes may malfunction due to damaged circuit boards that disrupt the operation of the device.
- Gun safes may malfunction in extreme temperatures due to the expanding and contracting of key components.
Companies that manufacture gun safes and other consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. Given the extreme danger that firearms can pose, it is essential that gun safes never allow unauthorized access. If a design defect with a gun safe leads to unauthorized access, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Gunshots can leave victims with traumatic injuries.
- Gunshot Wounds: These can cause severe damage to muscles, bones, and internal organs.
- Bone Fractures: Bullets can shatter bones, leading to complex fractures that require surgical intervention.
- Nerve Damage: Bullets can cause severe nerve damage, resulting in the loss of motor function in the affected area.
- Hand Injuries: An accidental injury can severely damage a person’s hand and result in the loss of one or more fingers.
- Death: A large number of people have died from accidental shootings, even though they received prompt medical care.
Gun safe manufacturers are supposed to test their products in all the ways that they could likely be used and misused. But rigorous testing over time can be expensive and delay the launch of a product. It is therefore not surprising that many companies take shortcuts in terms of safety. Any person that is injured due to a defect with a gun safe may have legal recourse. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
