Precor Issues Recall for Resolute Cable Multi-Station Exercise Machines Over Impact and Injury Hazard for Users
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (January 7, 2024) – Precor has issued a recall for its Resolute Cable Multi-Station exercise equipment because it can malfunction and injure users.
The recall was issued on December 26, 2024. Around 834 units were sold before the recall was announced.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the pop-pin can fail to engage on the machine’s vertical rail. If this happens, the pulley carriage can drop suddenly mid-use, thereby posing a crush hazard to users.
Precor has received a total of nine reports of the pulley system dropping. Two people have sustained head injuries.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Gym Equipment
Accidents involving gym equipment are unfortunately all too common. According to BMJ Journals, “An estimated 70 302 (95% CI 59 086 to 81 519) ED-treated injuries were attributed to mechanical home exercise equipment, from 2007 to 2011, in the USA. Most injuries were associated with treadmills, followed by stationary bicycle and unspecified/other exercise machines.” There are a number of ways that a person can be injured by home gym equipment.
- A person could be injured by resistance bands suddenly snapping or giving way.
- Loose bolts or screws could cause crucial portions of exercise equipment to come apart or shift during use.
- Sharp edges or poor ergonomics can pose a laceration hazard for users.
Companies have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. They must abide by all safety regulations set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Exercise equipment manufacturers must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could potentially be used and misused. If a product doesn’t have clear warnings about the potential risk of injury, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of faulty gym equipment often suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Amputations
- Lacerations
- Head injuries
- Crush injuries
Many of the injuries associated with home gym accidents are preventable. These accidents often involve equipment that fails to meet safety standards. Part of the problem is that much of the equipment that gets sold is manufactured or designed outside of the United States. These countries may not have safety regulations that are as strict before their products get imported into the US. Any person injured by home gym equipment may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
