Robert Scheurich, of Carpentersville, Died Following Car Crash That Pushed His Vehicle Into the Path of Metra Train by Northwest Highway and Hart Road in Barrington

.
BARRINGTON, ILLINOISĀ (September 24, 2026) – A 77-year-old man identified as Robert Scheurich has tragically died in a Barrington Metra train accident near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Hart Road.
Cook County officials are saying that the collision occurred around 11:45 AM on Friday morning. Three vehicles were reportedly involved in some type of collision when one of those vehicles being driven by Robert Scheurich became trapped on the train tracks.
That vehicle was subsequently hit by a Metra train. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Robert Scheurich was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in critical condition.
Sadly, he was pronounced deceased that same evening. A full investigation into all of the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Barrington Train Accidents
Illinois law requires that drivers exercise due care and abide by all traffic regulations necessary to avoid collisions. Pursuant to IllinoisĀ Vehicle Code § 11-601, āNo vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.ā Drivers must be particularly cautious near any railroad grade crossing. There are many different areas that should be investigated following any car accident at a railroad crossing.
- Speed: The speed of the vehicles and following distance between them is very important when it comes to determining who could be liable for the collision.
- Crossing Gates: Another important area of focus is the functionality of the crossing gates. It matters whether or not they were operating as intended.
- History: It should also be determined if there is a history of similar collisions at the site of the railroad crossing.
- Conductor: The actions of the train conductor should also be scrutinized. It matters whether or not that person used their horn or attempted to brake to avoid the collision.
The company that owned a Metra train could also potentially be legally responsible for a collision. This is particularly true if the train conductor failed to slow down or take evasive action that may have prevented the collision from occurring. Consider, for example, Espinoza v. Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co., 165 Ill. 2d 107 (1995). That case involved a freight train that collided with a passenger truck, thereby causing multiple occupants to be injured. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the freight conductor acted negligently by failing to slow down and apply emergency brakes, even though crew members saw vehicles ahead of them.
Steps to Take After Illinois Train Accidents
Train accidents result in many preventable injuries and deaths every year across the United States. According to the National Safety Council, āRailroad deaths totaled 959 in 2025, a 4% increase from the 2024 revised total of 924. Nonfatal injuries totaled 5,561, a 5% decrease from the 2024 revised total of 5,857. From 2024 to 2025, fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased 9%, while fatalities involving other types of incidents increased 2%.ā Multiple actions should be taken after any train accident in Illinois.
- The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin investigating.
- Any surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should be preserved before it is recorded over.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed as early as possible while their memories are still fresh.
- The family of any person who died should seek an independent investigation by a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.
Railroad crossings can be substantially more dangerous than many people realize. In particular, trains can be deceptively fast. One of the common causes of car accidents involving trains occurs when the vehicle involved becomes stuck on the set of train tracks. This could indicate major safety issues with the tracks that should absolutely be investigated further. It is important that the victims of these collisions understand that they do have legal rights. These rights extend to the surviving family members of any person killed in a train accident.
Investigating Illinois Train Accidents
It can be difficult to know where to begin after any train accident. These incidents routinely leave victims with catastrophic injuries and routinely cause fatalities. Unfortunately, train companies are not likely to accept responsibility after any accident. This is why it can be so important that these incidents are independently investigated by an outside party.
