Samsung Recalls Slide-In Electric Ranges Over Fire Risk

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 18, 2024) – Samsung has issued a recall for its Slide-In Electric Range ovens because they can pose a fire hazard.

The recall date was listed as August 8, 2024, according to the press release by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Around 1,120,905 of the affected ovens were sold.

The problem with the Slide-In Electric Range ovens is that they can be accidentally activated by pets or humans. This can create a fire hazard.

Samsung has received 300 reports of accidental activation. There have been approximately 250 fires, and 40 injuries have been reported.

Liability For Accidental Fires Caused By Ovens

Accidental fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “More than one-quarter (26%) of reported fires in 2015-2019 occurred in homes. Even worse, three-quarters (75%) of civilian fire deaths and almost three-quarters (72%) of all reported injuries were caused by home fires.” Many of these fires are caused by defective products.

  • Electrical Appliances: Faulty wiring can cause some products, like e-cigarettes, to catch fire.
  • Heating Devices: Many space heaters don’t have automatic shut-off systems. This can cause them to catch fire.
  • Cooking Equipment: Defective ovens or stoves may malfunction and cause fires. This is especially true with gas-powered devices.

Companies that manufacture ovens and other consumer goods have a legal obligation to make sure that they are reasonably safe. They must test their products and adhere to all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other agencies. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in a prima facie product liability case.

  • The defendant sold a product that a plaintiff used.
  • The defendant is the commercial seller of the product.
  • The plaintiff suffered an injury.
  • When the defendant sold the item, the product was defective.
  • The defect was an actual and proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.

One of the main reasons that companies create defective products is that they fail to adequately test these products. In the real world, millions of people may use a product. These products aren’t always used exactly as intended. Companies must at least consider how a product could be misused and take steps to make sure that it is not dangerous.
