Segway Issues Recall for Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters Over Fall and Injury Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (March 24, 2025) – Segway has issued a recall for its Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters because users can fall off and be seriously injured.
The recall was issued on March 20, 2025. Approximately 220,000 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the folding mechanism on the KickScooters can fail and cause the handlebars or stem to inadvertently fold during use.
This could cause the rider to suddenly fall off and be seriously injured in the process. Segway has received 68 reports of the folding mechanism suddenly failing.
This resulted in 20 reported injuries, including bruises, lacerations, and broken bones. The Segway Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters were sold at numerous retailers, including Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club.
The affected scooters are gray in color and come with yellow accents. The brand name “ninebot” also appears on the foot of the platform.
Liability for Injuries Involving Scooters
Injuries involving scooters remain very common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “There were an estimated 360,800 emergency department visits related to all micromobility devices from 2017 through 2022. Fractures, followed by contusions/abrasions, are the two most common injuries. The most frequently injured body areas are the upper and lower limbs, as well as the head and neck.” Many of these injuries are the results of defects with the scooters as opposed to car accidents.
- Many people have been injured with scooters due to brake failures.
- Battery malfunctions are also another common problem. A scooter could be tucked away in some part of a person’s home and inadvertently catch fire as it is being charged.
- Throttle sticking is another common issue that people have experienced. This could lead to them colliding with fixed objects or being thrown off.
- Handlebar failures could also contribute to an accident. If the stem on a scooter suddenly collapses, the scooter can immediately become unstable.
Companies that create scooters and other micro mobility devices have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways their devices could potentially be used and even misused. They should also consider how a device might hold up over time with routine use. If a scooter has a design defect that contributes to a rider being injured, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. There are many different defects with a scooter that could potentially contribute to handlebars inadvertently collapsing.
- A scooter may have a faulty folding mechanism that fails to adequately lock in place.
- A scooter may have stripped or loose bolts that failed to adequately hold the handlebar in place.
- A scooter may have a cracked or weak stem that could potentially cause it to fail under high pressure.
- A scooter could have a defective quick release clamp that could inadvertently slip mid-use.
Design defects could occur at many points of a scooter’s construction. Some design defects could be inherent, which means they are present when the product is manufactured. In other situations, a defect may be the result of some type of error that occurs during the actual manufacture and construction of the scooter. Scooter accidents can result in very serious injuries. It is important that victims understand that they do have legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
