Sondiko Butane Torches Recalled Due to Violations of Federal Regulations for Multipurpose Lighters
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 10, 2025) – Sondiko Butane Torches have been recalled because they can pose a serious fire and burn hazard, according to the recall notice.
The recall was issued on April 24, 2025. Roughly 33,650 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled Sondiko Butane Torches violate federal regulations for multipurpose sliders. In particular, they do not have child-resistant mechanisms.
This could pose a serious risk of burden, injury, or death for small children. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The devices were sold on Amazon from October 2023 through March 2025.
Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Many people are injured by consumer products every year. According to the Consumer Safety Council, “In 2023, 12.7 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from consumer products. Most of the injuries involve everyday products often assumed to be safe. Many of these injuries occur to our most vulnerable populations, older adults and young children.” There are a number of measures that company should take in order to make products safe for children.
- Certain products will need child safety seals in order to prevent children from inadvertently opening them.
- Multipurpose lighters and certain other products will need child-resistant mechanisms to prevent accidental use by children.
- Products with small parts or batteries should have child-resistant compartments.
- Products that may be inherently dangerous for children should have warning labels.
Companies that design consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. To that end, they must comply with all federal regulations related to their product. In particular, multipurpose lighters should have child-resistant mechanisms. When devices fail to have these mechanisms, children could be burned by the lighters or potentially use them to start fires.
Many consumers have been injured by products that lacked child-resistant packaging or safety mechanisms. Consider, for example, Jeffers v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. A plaintiff alleged that a product sold at Walmart containing pesticides lacked child-resistant packaging. This allegedly resulted in the plaintiff being injured. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a consumer product.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- It should be determined if the product was on any recall lists.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
It can be hard to know where to begin if your child has been injured by a consumer product. These injuries can leave parents with high medical bills. To make matters worse, companies that make unsafe products will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility for injuries. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
