South Shore Cribs Recalled Due to Violation of Federal Regulation and Potential Entrapment Hazard

South Shore Cribs Recalled Over Safety Violations and Entrapment Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 10, 2024) – South Shore Cribs were recalled because they can pose an entrapment hazard to babies.

The recall was issued on November 21. Around 1,200 cribs were sold before the recall went into effect. Model numbers for the affected product include 13825, 13824, 12937, 12938, and 14408.

The cribs are pure white and natural wood for the legs. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the spacing between some of the crib’s slats is wider than what is allowed by federal standards.

This can pose an entrapment hazard to children.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Cribs

Parents buy cribs to keep their children safe while they sleep. But far too often these products can cause serious injury or death when they do not comply with safety regulations. According to KHQ, “More than 9,500 babies and toddlers go to the emergency room each year because of injuries related to cribs, playpens and bassinets, according to a 19-year study released today. An average of 113 children die each year from these accidents, according to the study, published in Pediatrics.” There are a number of different ways that a crib may lead to injuries.

  • Weak or Collapsing Frames: If the structure of the crib is unstable, this could easily lead to a collapse.
  • Gaps Between The Mattress and Crib Sides: If the mattress for the crib does not fit properly, a child’s body can easily become entrapped.
  • Choking Hazards: Cribs that have small detachable parts can become choking hazards.

Companies that create cribs have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must comply with all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If a crib has design defects that contribute to an accident, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. It is important that several steps are taken after any injury involving a crib.

  • Medical records related to the accident should be collected.
  • It should be determined if the crib was part of a recall.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

Accidents involving baby cribs are often highly preventable. They tend to take place when companies are taking shortcuts and not following safety regulations. In many situations, cribs manufactured overseas are sold in the U.S. market, even though they don’t meet safety standards. The family of any person whose child is injured by a crib may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
