Thermos Issues Recall for Stainless King Food Jars and Bottles Because They Can Pose Major Impact and Laceration Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 10, 2026) – Thermos has issued a recall of its popular 16-oz Stainless King Food Jar and Bottles because they can pose a major laceration hazard.
The recall was issued on April 30, 2026. Roughly 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened if perishable food is left inside of the container for a long period of time. This creates a major impact and laceration hazard for consumers.
Thermos has received 27 reports of people being hit by the stoppers after they were forcefully ejected from the opening. The products were sold at a variety of stores, including Amazon, Walmart, and Target.
Liability for Accidents Involving Dangerous Consumer Products
Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. A company could be liable for any injuries caused by a faulty consumer product if it was unreasonably dangerous because of some type of defect. Product liability claims asserting negligence will typically be based on the idea that the product had a defective design, manufacturing flaws, or marketing defects. Several elements must be demonstrated in any prima facie case of product liability.
- The defendant sold the product that was used by the plaintiff.
- The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
- The plaintiff suffered an injury through their use of the product.
- The product was defective at the time it was sold by the defendant.
- The defect with the product was the actual or proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.
One of the major ways that companies can help prevent selling dangerous consumer products is through rigorous testing. They must test their product in all the ways that that product will likely be used and misused. Special attention should be given to any product that is likely going to be used by children. Courts will also consider certain tests when assessing whether or not a manufacturer is liable for damage involving a product. Defendants will typically not be liable for design defects when evidence shows that the product’s utility outweighs any inherent risk of harm.
Steps to Take After Injuries Caused by Consumer Products
Injuries involving consumer products remain quite common. According to the National Safety Council, “Following the record low number of consumer product-related injuries reported in 2020, injuries increased 6.8% in 2021, 7.8% in 2022, 0.6% in 2023, and now 18.2% in 2024.” Victims of defective consumer products should take several steps to protect their health and legal rights.
- Victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation.
- The product involved in the injury should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause further harm.
- It should be determined if the product was on any recall list.
- Any person injured by a defective product should seek the guidance of a product liability attorney.
It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured by a consumer product. Many people will blame themselves for these incidents. However, many injuries involving consumer products are the cause of major safety lapses. Victims of defective consumer products are able to pursue some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a personal injury claim could help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
