Liability for Plainfield Car Accidents

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Between 1913 and 2022 motor-vehicle deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles decreased 95%, from 33 to 1.50, respectively. In 1913, only 1.3 million vehicles were registered, and 4,200 people died on the road. In 2022, 283 million vehicles were registered, and 46,027 people died on the road.” There are a number of common causes of car accidents.

  • Car accidents are much more likely when drivers are speeding.
  • Nearly 1/3 of all fatal accidents involve a driver who is intoxicated.
  • Car accidents are much more likely to occur at intersections, especially when drivers are making turns.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Many collections involved drivers who were making dangerous turns in the roadway. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-902), any person intending to turn left must first yield the right of way to any vehicle traveling from the opposite direction that is close enough so as to pose a hazard. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It could be hard to know where to begin after any car accident. Accident victims often need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be burdened by high medical bills. Any person that is injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
