Two workers identified as Curt and Walker fell 17 feet and were pinned by the fallen trusses. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
They were airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana with critical injuries. A full investigation into the Casey construction accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Casey Construction Accidents
Many construction workers are killed or seriously injured on the job every year. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “In 2021, nearly 1 in 5 workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry. Just over one-third of construction deaths were due to falls, slips, and trips. Of these, almost all were from falls to a lower level. The construction industry accounted for 46.2 percent of all fatal falls, slips, and trips in 2021.” Construction companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.
- Construction companies should provide all workers with comprehensive training.
- Construction companies should provide all workers with personal protective equipment. This may include personal fall arrest systems.
- Construction companies should conduct regular site inspections.
- Construction companies should follow all OSHA safety guidelines.
When a worker is injured on the job, they will typically have recourse through the worker’s compensation system. Worker’s compensation operates off of a no-fault insurance scheme, and there is no need to demonstrate fault. An injured worker may also be able to seek aid through a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible when an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. For example, a general contractor could be liable for failing to maintain a job site in a safe condition. Victims of construction accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
Construction accents can be extremely traumatic for victims. Many victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They are also highly preventable. They tend to occur when general contractors and builders violate safety standards. It is important for workers to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek aid through a civil claim.
