Wild Country Ropeman 1 Ascenders Recalled Due To Failure To Ascend

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 25, 2024) – Salewa USA has issued a recall for Wild Country Ropeman 1 Ascenders because the mechanism with the device can fail.

The recall was issued on June 6, 2024. About 7,700 of the devices were sold, including 297 sold in Canada. The issue with the Wild Country Ropeman 1 ascenders is that the teeth can fail to engage and make it difficult or impossible for the user to ascend.

This device is used in mountaineering and rock climbing. REI and other outdoor stores sold the device. It could also be purchased at several online stores.

Liability For Accidents Caused By Rock Climbing Equipment

Rock climbing can be an extremely dangerous sport in the best of circumstances. Climbers need to be able to depend on their equipment to function in all circumstances. However, many accidents are caused by faulty equipment. According to World Metrics, “Approximately 8% injuries in rock climbing are related to climbing equipment failure.” Companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent their equipment from failing when people are rock climbing.

  • Rigorous Testing: Companies should design equipment that is meant to meet or exceed industry safety standards.
  • Redundancies: Companies should incorporate redundant safety features into their designs when possible.
  • Quality Control: Companies should implement strict quality control measures designed to detect and eliminate defects.
  • Warning Labels: Companies should include appropriate warning labels to inform users about proper handling and potential risks.

Equipment failures in rock climbing can be particularly dangerous and lead to severe injuries. Companies that manufacture the equipment used for this activity must do everything feasible to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. This includes ensuring that their products are compliant with regulatory agencies, including the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It is important that certain steps be taken after any rock climbing accident.

  • Victims should seek medical attention as early as possible. Even seemingly small injuries can turn out to be very serious later on.
  • All evidence related to the accident should be preserved. This includes taking photos of the accident site.
  • It should be determined if the equipment involved in the accident was part of any recall.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted. An attorney can investigate your accident free of charge and let you know what your legal options are.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any rock climbing accident. Victims are often left with lasting injuries that can impact their ability to work or simply enjoy life. Unfortunately, sporting goods companies will do everything in their power to deny liability if someone is injured by their products. This is one of the reasons it is so important to have any accident evaluated by a knowledgeable attorney.
