Woom Bikes USA Recalled Children's Bicycles Over Crash Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (December 13, 2024) – Woom Bikes USA has issued a recall because several of its bicycles can pose a fall and crash hazard.

The recall was issued on November 14, 2024. Around 2,500 units were sold.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the crank on the bike can break due to fatigue. If this happens, the rider can lose control and crash.

Woom Bikes USA has received 5 reports of the crank breaking. One child sustained an injury in a crash. Affected products include the OFF 5, OFF AIR 5, OFF 6, OFF AIR 6, and ORIGINAL 6.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Bicycles

Bicycle accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury for children. According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, “from January 2006 through December 2015, more than 2.2 million children age 5-17 years were treated in US hospital emergency departments for bicycle-related injuries. This averages 608 cases per day or 25 every hour.” There are a number of ways that a bicycle may malfunction and injure the rider.

  • The tires on a bicycle can deflate for many different reasons.
  • The brakes on the bicycle can fail and cause the rider to lose control.
  • The chain on the bicycle can come off.
  • The motor on electric bicycles can stop working.

Companies that create bicycles have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must adhere to all safety regulations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition to those regulations, they must ensure that all of the component parts of the bike stand the test of time. They should not be prone to breaking prematurely. Victims of bicycle accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

If a design defect contributes to any accident resulting in an injury, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Sadly, though, companies that make bicycles and other consumer products will often fight hard to deny liability if one of their products injures someone. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. Any person injured may be able to seek some measure of justice through a personal injury claim.
