United Passenger Trips Over Entry To Aircraft ($390,000)

A passenger on United Airlines recovered $390,000.00 after suffering a rupture of his Achilles tendon in his foot.

The Case

The passenger tripped in the uneven space between the walkway leading up to the airplane and the airplane itself.

In-Depth Look

The airplane entry level was 4 inches above the walkway resulting in a significant tripping hazard without warning. The operators had misplaced the walkway that leads up to the airplane.

The airline argued that the defect was minor and the passenger was not looking where he was going.
