BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells Recalled Over Injury Hazard

Johnson Health Tech Trading Issues Recall for BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells Over Impact and Injury Hazard

BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells Recalled Over Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 28, 2025) – BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells have been recalled because they can pose a serious risk of injury to people who are using them as intended.

The recall was issued on June 5, 2025. Around 3.8 million units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the weight plates on the BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells can inadvertently dislodge from the handle during use.

This creates the risk of the weights potentially falling on a person’s head, arms, legs, and other body parts. There have been hundreds of reports of the plates dislodging.

An estimated 111 people sustained injuries while using the weights. Victims sustained numerous injuries such as concussions, contusions, and broken toes.

Liability for Injuries Caused By Consumer Products

Injuries involving gym equipment are actually much more common than many people realize. According to Safer America, “An estimated total of 3,057,673 injuries were caused by products in the Sports and Recreational Equipment category. Within this category, exercise equipment accounted for 409,224 estimated injuries in 2021. The estimated number of exercise equipment-related injuries increased by about 8.3% from the year before.” Gym equipment poses many different risks to consumers.

  • Falls: In many cases, consumers may be hit by gym equipment that falls on top of them. This could include weights that hit them.
  • Crush: It is also possible that consumers sustain crushing injuries if their hands or other body parts become trapped between certain compartments.
  • Mechanical Failures: Gym equipment may not function as intended and break apart mid-use.

Companies that manufacture gym equipment have a legal obligation to ensure that it is reasonably safe. This necessitates that they test their equipment in all the ways that it is likely to be used and even misused. If a piece of gym equipment has a propensity to malfunction during normal use, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. In particular, heavy weights should be reasonably secure at all times. Product liability claims tend to fall into three different categories.

  • Design Defects: These are defects inherent to the way that a product is made. The present before the product is manufactured.
  • Manufacturing Defects: During the manufacturing process, flaws may occur that make a product dangerous.
  • Marketing Defects: Marketing defects occur when a company fails to warn about the latent dangers associated with their product.

Even in the case that a product is defective due to a design flaw, certain courts will typically use one of two tests to determine whether or not the defendant is liable for injuries. With the risk-utility test, the defendant is typically not liable for design defects if there is evidence that the product’s utility outweighs any inherent risks of harm. With the consumer expectation test, a defendant is not liable if a reasonable consumer would not find the product to be defective when it is used in a reasonable manner.
