Liability for Warrensburg Home Explosions
Gas leaks remain one of the leading causes of home explosions. According to Reuters, “Over 2,600 hazardous gas pipeline leaks in the United States caused more than $4 billion in damages and emergency services, killed 122 people, and released 26.6 billion cubic feet of fuel as methane or carbon dioxide, according to a report released on Thursday.” There are a number of potential issues with gas lines that could lead to an explosion.
- Corrosion: Gas pipelines can corrode over time due to weather exposure, moisture, and electrical currents. Internal impurities with natural gas can also lead to the corrosion on the inside of gas lines.
- Poor Maintenance: Infrequent inspections can potentially allow small leaks or defects with a gas line to go completely unnoticed.
- Welding Defects: Gas lines stretch for many miles. They are held together by connectors and welding on certain occasions. If those connections are defective in any way, this could lead to a major leak and an explosion.
Gas companies across Illinois in the United States have a duty of care to protect their customers from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes protecting them from explosions caused by defective or damaged gas lines. When a gas company has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their property, they must take action. Failing to take action to protect customers from being injured could form the basis of a negligence claim.
This explosion in Warrensburg comes just three weeks after a suspected gas explosion in Madison County, Illinois. That incident injured two adults and their three children. The family called the gas company to come and inspect after they reported smelling gas. The gas company said that the property was safe not long before the home exploded and seriously injured 5 people. It is important that certain steps are taken after any home explosion.
- The cause of the explosion should be determined.
- The maintenance history of the gas lines at the home should be investigated.
- The condition of the appliances at the home should be scrutinized.
Home explosions are often highly complex events. The factors that contribute to any explosion could take place hours, days, or even years beforehand. These incidents routinely involve some amount of negligence on the part of gas companies. Sadly, these companies will often do everything in their power to avoid responsibility when someone is injured in a gas explosion. This is why it is so important that these incidents are thoroughly investigated by an outside party.
