Vive Health Compact Bed Rails Recalled Over Asphyxiation Risk

Vive Health Issues Recall for Adult Portable Bed Rails After Two Deaths Have Been Linked to the Devices

Vive Health Compact Bed Rails Recalled Over Asphyxiation Risk

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 4, 2026) – Vive Health has issued a recall for its Adult Portable Bed Rails because they can pose a serious entrapment and asphyxiation risk.

The recall was issued on March 26, 2026. Roughly 122,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recalled bed rails can allow users to become entrapped between the bed rail and the side of the mattress.

This creates a major risk that users could have their upper bodies compressed and restrict their breathing. In certain situations, this can result in death by asphyxiation.

Two deaths have been linked to the model that has been recalled. One death involved a 97-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Texas.

The other death reportedly involved a 93-year-old man who was living at his Florida home.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Adult Portable Bed Rails

Medical product companies have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are relatively safe. They must be tested in all of the ways that they’re likely to be used or even potentially misused. Moreover, manufacturers must take into consideration all of the different types of consumers that may use their products. In particular, people who need bed rails may have various disabilities that limit their mobility. There are many ways that an adult portable bed rail may be dangerous.

  • Bed rails may allow for a gap between the rail and the side of the mattress.
  • Bed rails may encourage users to climb over the bed, which can heighten the risk of injury from falls.
  • Bed rails can easily shift or detach if they are not installed correctly or installed on a non-standard mattress.
  • Bed rails can allow a user’s neck to get caught in open bars.

If a bed rail has design defects that increase the odds a user could potentially become entrapped, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. In particular, a bed rail may violate federal safety standards. Among other things, bed rails must come with clear installation instructions and entrapment hazard warnings. If a company fails to warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with their products, this could be construed as negligence.

Steps to Take After Being Injured by Consumer Products

It is well known that adult portable bed rails can be extremely dangerous and pose a major risk of entrapment and asphyxiation in certain conditions. According to the National Council on Aging, “While designed to help prevent someone from falling out of bed and provide extra support, adult portable bed rails caused at least 284 entrapment deaths between January 2003 and December 2021. And a voluntary safety standard has proven to lack widespread industry compliance.” Several steps should be taken after any injury or death caused by adult portable bed rails.

  • All of the medical records associated with treatment should be collected and preserved.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Any police report created about the incident should be reviewed.
  • It should be determined if the product involved in the incident was recalled.
  • The family of any person who died should seek an independent review of the accident by a team experienced in product liability law.

It can be difficult to know where to begin after a loved one has been harmed by a portable bed rail. To make matters worse, the companies that manufacture these products will virtually never accept responsibility when one of their products injures someone. This is why it is so important that these accidents are investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died in an accident with an adult bed rail may have recourse through a civil claim.
