Liability for Joliet Pickup Truck Accidents
Many pedestrians are seriously injured or killed in car accidents every year. Larger vehicles tend to be particularly dangerous. According to National Public Radio, “Vehicles with higher front ends and blunt profiles are 45% more likely to cause fatalities in crashes with pedestrians than smaller cars and trucks, according to new research published Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.
- Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns at intersections.
- Drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
- Drivers should use their horns when necessary to alert pedestrians of their presence.
Drivers must use caution in order to avoid car accidents. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horns when necessary and exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, they could be held at fault through a civil claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers failed to adequately scan the road ahead of them. It is important that victims of pedestrian accidents undergo a thorough medical evaluation. Many of the injuries associated with pedestrian accidents are not immediately obvious. Accident victims should also seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney can help victims get the medical and financial support that they need in order to recover.
