CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 10, 2025) – At least 9 people were injured after a Far South Side, Chicago Pace bus was involved in a collision on South Halsted Street.
Cook County officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:30 PM on Wednesday. An SUV was heading east along Vermont Street when the driver allegedly ran a red light and collided with two passenger vehicles and a Pace bus.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. In total, there were nine victims, including a six-year-old boy in one of the passenger vehicles.

Liability for Cook County Pace Bus Accidents
Buses are an important facet of public transportation, but these vehicles tend to pose a number of unique risks to those in passenger vehicles. Several factors increase the odds of bus accidents. According to the Journal of Safety Research, “Results show that accident severity increases: (i) for young bus drivers under the age of 25; (ii) for drivers beyond the age of 55, and most prominently for drivers over 65 years old; (iii) for female drivers; (iv) for very high (over 65 mph) and very low (under 20 mph) speed limits; (v) at intersections; (vi) because of inattentive and risky driving.” Bus companies should take preventative measures to prevent collisions.
- Maintenance: Bus companies should ensure that their vehicles are routinely inspected and maintained.
- Speed: Bus companies should ensure that their drivers are operating at a safe speed at all times.
- Safety Features: Bus companies should consider adding forward collision avoidance systems and other safety features.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. Pursuant to 625 ILCS 5/11-306, the driver of any vehicle facing a red light must remain at the intersection and only proceed after the light turns green and it is safe to do so. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that goes past a yield sign without stopping and hits another vehicle. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any bus accident.
- The condition of all vehicles involved in a collision should be scrutinized.
- The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin an immediate investigation.
- Accident victims should receive a thorough medical evaluation as early as possible. Those records should be collected.
- Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should also be sought.
It is important that victims of bus accidents understand that they do have legal options. The FMCSA requires buses that can transport 16 or more passengers to have at least $5 million in liability coverage. This can be used to help people who sustained injuries or lost wages after any collision. Sadly, insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny any responsibility if someone is injured in a bus accident. This is why it is so important that victims seek the guidance of an experienced Chicago bus accident attorney.
