Attom Tech Recalled LED Light-up Jelly Ring Toys Over Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 31, 2024) – Attom Tech has issued a recall for its LED Light-up Jelly Ring Toys over concerns that their batteries can be ingested.

The recall was issued on August 1, 2024. Around 4,100 units were sold. The toys come in a variety of shapes and colors.

However, the button-cell batteries with the devices can be easily accessed without tools. This can lead to situations where small children ingest the batteries.

If ingested, these batteries can cause internal chemical burns and death. The LED Light-up Jelly Ring Toys were sold exclusively on Amazon.

Liability For Injuries Involving Children’s Toys

Accidents involving children’s toys remain alarmingly common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “An estimated 209,500 toy-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments in 2022, and males accounted for 54 percent of the injuries. Of the estimated 209,500 toy-related injuries, 76 percent were sustained by children 14 years of age or younger; 69 percent were sustained by children 12 years of age or younger; and 38 percent were sustained by children 4 years of age or younger.” Toys can pose a number of possible hazards for small children.

  • Choking Hazards: Toys that have small or detectable parts can pose a choking hazard for small children.
  • Strangulation Hazard: Toys that have strings, cords, or ribbons can become wrapped around a child’s neck, leading to strangulation.
  • Toxic Materials: Some toys contain harmful chemicals such as lead, PFAS (forever chemicals), and fire retardants.

All companies that create toys for children have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their toys are likely to be used and misused. In particular, they need to take into consideration the ways that children are known to behave. Among other things, it is well known that children often put small objects in their mouths. Companies should mitigate this by preventing children from opening their toys without tools. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving a childhood toy.

  • Medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
  • A thorough investigation into the accident should be conducted.
  • It should be determined if the product was on any recall list.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

The vast majority of injuries involving childhood toys are preventable. They tend to involve situations where companies fail to follow safety standards. It is also possible that toys are imported into the United States from locations where safety standards are not as strict. Parents do have rights if their child is injured by a dangerous toy. They are able to seek some level of accountability through a civil claim.
