CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 19, 2026) – BISSELL has issued a recall for its popular Steam Shot OmniReach Steam Cleaners because they can pose a serious burn hazard and injury risk.

The recall was issued on April 9, 2026. Roughly 1.7 million units were sold prior to the recall, including 96,000 sold in Canada.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the attachments on the Steam Shot OmniReach Steam Cleaners can unexpectedly expel steam. This poses a serious burn hazard.

BISSELL has received 206 reports of steam escaping from the units. This includes 161 incident reports of people suffering serious burn injuries.

Prior to the recall, the devices could be purchased at a number of different stores, including Amazon and Walmart.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Consumer Products

Companies that create consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure those products are safe. They must routinely test their products and abide by all safety standards. This is particularly important for any product that uses steam or heat. Several elements must be demonstrated for any case alleging product liability.

  • The defendant sold the product that the plaintiff used.
  • The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
  • The plaintiff suffered an injury through their use of the product.
  • The product was defective at the time it was sold to the defendant.
  • The defect with the product was the actual and proximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.

There are many different ways that a consumer product could be considered defective. For product liability claims alleging negligence, attorneys will typically argue the product had a defective design. A product will typically have a defective design if it is likely to cause injury during normal use. A product could also be considered defective if it lacked adequate warnings about latent dangers associated with the product.

Steps to Take After Injuries Caused by Defective Consumer Products

Many people are injured every year in accidents involving consumer products. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “In 2020, an estimated 28,535,000 people sought medical attention for an injury related to, but not necessarily caused by, a consumer product. This is a decrease of more than 7.7 million (21 percent) from the 2019 estimate.” Several different actions should be taken after any accident involving a consumer product.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment for any outstanding injuries.
  • All medical records related to that treatment should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the affected product was on any recall lists.
  • Victims should contact an experienced product liability attorney.

Many people will blame themselves if they are injured by a defective consumer product. But the fact of the matter is that many of these accidents involve defective equipment. Moreover, companies may have known about the risks associated with their product but still failed to take action. Any person injured by a defective product may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
