Deale International Issues Recall for CasaClean Handheld Steamers Over Risk Consumers May Be Burned and Seriously Injured

CasaClean Handheld Steamers Recalled Over Burn Injury Risk

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 3, 2025) – Deale International has issued a recall for its white and gray CasaClean Handheld Steamers (Model DF-958) because they can pose an injury hazard.

The recall was issued on July 17, 2025. About 23,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the CasaClean Handheld Steamers can inadvertently leak or spew boiling hot water. This water can hit consumers, thereby putting them at risk of serious injury.

Deale International has received 26 reports of the steamers leaking water. This includes 13 separate incidents where consumers were burned by the product.

The CasaClean Handheld Steamers were initially manufactured in China.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Consumer Products

Accidents involving household cleaning products are relatively common. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 12.7 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from consumer products. Most of the injuries involve everyday products often assumed to be safe. Many of these injuries occur to our most vulnerable populations, older adults and young children. Common products such as televisions, household cleaning products, and even beds can pose risks.” Steam cleaners can be particularly dangerous.

  • Consumers using steam cleaners may inadvertently cause themselves to sustain first, second, and third degree burns.
  • Consumers using steam cleaners are at risk of sustaining nerve damage from the excessive heat of the steam.
  • Consumers are also at risk of losing vision in one or both eyes if the steam hits their face.

Companies that create household cleaning products have a legal obligation to ensure that their device is reasonably safe. Products with inherent defects could become the focus of product liability lawsuits. These claims are typically based on negligence, strict liability, or breach of warranty. With respect to household cleaning products, many lawsuits are based on a failure to warn claim. In other words, a manufacturer failed to warn consumers about the latent dangers associated with their products. If a claim is based on an alleged design flaw, courts will typically use two tests to determine if the defendant is liable.

  • Risk Utility Test: A defendant typically won’t be liable for a design defect if they are able to produce evidence that the product’s utility outweighs any inherent risks of harm.
  • Consumer Expectation Test: A product won’t typically be considered defective if a reasonable consumer would not find the product to be defective when they are using it in a reasonable manner.

It can be hard to know what to do if you’ve been injured by a consumer product. Many victims sustain very serious injuries that require them to take extensive periods of time away from work. Burn injuries are among the most painful and difficult to recover from. They can require numerous expensive skin graft surgeries. Any person that is injured by a defective consumer product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
