ChrisDowa Roller Window Shades, Sold Exclusively on Amazon, Recalled Over Federal Regulations for Window Coverings and Strangulation Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (January 25, 2025) – ChrisDowa Roller Window Shades have been recalled because they can pose a strangulation hazard for toddlers and infants.
The recall was issued on January 23, 2025. Roughly 19,500 units were sold.
According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the ChrisDowa Roller Window Shades have long operating cords that can lead to the entanglement and strangulation of children.
These window shades also violate federal regulations for window coverings. No injuries have been reported at this time.
Liability for Deaths and Injuries Caused by Window Shades
Window shades can become a serious and lethal hazard for small children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “On average, about nine children under 5 years of age die every year from strangling in window blinds, shades, draperies and other window coverings with cords. There were more than 200 incidents involving children up to 8 years old due to strangulation hazards from window covering cords during a 13-year period from January 2009 through December 2021. A child died in 48% of those incidents.” There are a number of federal requirements that window shades and blinds must adhere to.
- All window blinds must be compliant with the Window Covering Safety Standard. These products should include cord management devices, such as tension devices.
- There should also be a mandatory warning label on blinds and shades about the hazards that they posed to children.
- Blinds and shades should typically eliminate cords in favor of cordless options.
All companies that create window shades or blinds have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. Any type of shade or blind with dangling cords poses a known strangulation hazard to children. Many children have died from these types of accidents. When a product manufacturer fails to comply with federal safety regulations for blinds or other devices, they could be held liable through a strict liability claim in the event of an injury. It is important that certain steps are taken after any child has been injured by shade cords.
- Medical records related to the incident should be collected.
- It should be determined if the blinds or shades were part of any recall.
- The shades involved in the incident should be preserved.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
The vast majority of accidents involving window blinds or shades are completely preventable. In many cases, accidents happen in buildings where older shades are already present. But in many situations, manufacturers ignore safety requirements mandated by federal regulations. It is important that consumers understand that they do have rights. The parent of any child harmed by window blinds or shade cords may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
