Creekliybear Play Yard Mattresses Violate Mandatory Standards for Crib Mattresses

Creekliybear Play Yard Mattresses Recalled Over Entrapment Risk

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 27, 2025) – Creekliybear Play Yard Mattresses were recalled because they can pose a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment.

The recall was issued on July 10, 2025. Roughly 21,500 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Creekliybear Play Yard Mattresses violate mandatory standards for crib mattresses. In particular, the mattresses exceed thickness requirements.

The mattresses may not adequately fit certain Play Yard cribs. This could lead to a dangerous situation where babies become trapped between an undersized mattress and the wall of a crib.

Babies could suffocate in that gap. The Creekliybear Play Yard Mattresses were originally manufactured in China and sold on Amazon.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Baby Products

Suffocation is a major cause of injury or death for infants. According to one study in the National Institute of Health, “Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury death among infants <1 year old in the United States, with 82% being attributable to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. Understanding the circumstances surrounding these deaths may inform prevention strategies.” Infant cribs should have safety requirements that are designed to prevent suffocation.

  • Slat Spacing: The slats on cribs should not be more than 2 3/8 inches apart.
  • Mattress Fit: mattresses should fit snugly within a crib. There should be no more than two fingers of space to prevent any child from becoming entrapped.
  • Mattress Support: Mattresses should be reasonably firm to prevent them from collapsing or sloping.

Companies that design and manufacture baby mattresses have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. To that end, they must abide by all federal safety standards for mattresses. These companies must take into consideration all of the factors that could lead to suffocation. When a company creates products with design defects, they could be held liable through a product liability claim.

A number of lawsuits have been filed by parents whose children have been seriously injured or killed by baby sleep products. In particular, there was one instance when a 3-month-old baby died after being dropped off at Waldron Mercy Academy’s Child Care Center. According to the court case, the child stopped breathing in their crib after becoming entrapped in a four-inch gap between the side of the mattress and side rails. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving baby products.

  • The product in question should be stored in a safe location that is not likely to cause further harm.
  • Medical records related to any injuries should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the product involved was on a recall list.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

The vast majority of injuries involving consumer products are preventable. It can be expensive to bring any product to market. For that reason, many companies look to save on costs everywhere they can. This can lead to questionable design decisions that prioritize cost-cutting at the expense of safety. Any person injured by a consumer product may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
